Summary
The developer does not collect, store or sell any of your data. There are no analytics, ads or trackers. The developer's only server is used just to pass on translations when you choose Free AI, and it keeps no text.
The default on-device mode uses Chrome's built-in translation, so text is processed only on your device.
Only if you choose an AI model and then click Translate (or choose full-page translation) is the relevant text sent directly from your browser to the AI provider you picked, using your own API key.
With Free AI, only selection translation uses it: the text you choose to translate passes through the developer's server on Cloudflare to Cloudflare Workers AI.
1Scope
This policy explains how the Chrome extension “隨選翻譯 — Context Translator” (the “extension”) handles data. The extension is open source and published by JAYlly CAT; the code is on GitHub, so anyone can verify what is described here.
2What the developer does not collect
The extension has no accounts. Apart from the optional Free AI described in section 4, there are no developer-operated servers that receive data. The developer never receives or stores:
the pages you visit, your browsing history or page content;
the text you select or translate, or the translations (with Free AI, text only passes through the server to be translated and is never logged or stored);
your API keys;
usage statistics, crash reports, device information or any identifiers.
The extension sets no cookies, shows no ads and loads no third-party analytics or tracking code.
3Data stored in your browser
To remember your settings, the extension uses Chrome's chrome.storage.sync. If Chrome Sync is turned on, Google syncs this data to your other computers signed in to the same account; the developer cannot read it. If you tick “Keep keys on this computer only” in the settings, API keys are stored in chrome.storage.local instead and are not synced.
Data
Purpose
Selection translation on/off
Whether to show the Translate button after you select text
Translation engine
On-device translation, or the AI provider you chose
API keys
Kept per provider and used only when calling that provider
Target language
The language to translate into
Key storage
Whether API keys sync with Chrome or stay on this computer
Custom model name
A model name you entered under Advanced (optional)
Translations today
A date and a count, shown in the settings window only; never sent anywhere
Install ID (this computer only)
A random ID created the first time you use Free AI; sent only with Free AI requests, to count daily use
Free AI remaining (this computer only)
How many free translations are left today, shown in the settings window; when none are left, nothing is sent
Providers with a key (this computer only)
Provider names only, never the keys, so the Translate button on web pages knows which engine to use; code running in web pages never reads your keys
Working endpoint (this computer only)
Kimi and MiniMax have China and international sites; remembers the one your key works with, so requests go straight there
During full-page translation, translated paragraphs are kept in that tab's memory so that restoring and translating again does not resend them. This is cleared when you reload or close the tab and is never written to disk.
You can clear an API key in the settings window at any time. Removing the extension makes Chrome delete all of the data above.
4When data is sent
On-device translation (default)
Uses Chrome's built-in translation and language detection on your device. The first time you translate a language, Chrome may download a language pack from Google; Chrome handles that download and it does not contain the text you translate. In this mode the extension sends no page content anywhere.
Free AI (optional, 10 a day, no key needed)
Selection translation only: when you choose Free AI in the settings and click Translate, the selected text, about 200 characters on each side of it, the target language and the install ID are sent to a server the developer runs on Cloudflare (Cloudflare Workers), which passes them to a Cloudflare Workers AI model for translation. Full-page translation never uses Free AI; it always runs on your device.
No text is kept: the server does not log or store the text you translate or the translation.
Counting use: the server keeps only today's count, keyed by the install ID and a hash of your IP address (for IPv6, of your network block); the IP itself is never stored. The key used for the hash is randomly generated and stored straight into Cloudflare's encrypted settings (it cannot be read back), never in storage or backups, and the hash also includes the date. So the stored hashes cannot be turned back into an IP or linked across days. Counts are deleted when the day changes.
When the free translations are used up or the service is unavailable, that translation is done on your device instead and nothing is sent.
Selection translation: when you click Translate, the selected text and about 200 characters on each side of it are sent to the provider you chose, to resolve word sense and context.
Full-page translation: after you choose “全頁翻譯” (Translate full page) from the right-click menu, paragraphs near the visible area are sent in batches together with the page title; later paragraphs are sent only as you scroll to them. Site menus, navigation bars, site headers and footers, and sidebars are not sent.
Page URLs and cookies are never sent, and full-page translation skips form fields.
Requests go directly from your browser to the provider, never through the developer. Your API key is sent in a request header, only to the matching provider.
Nothing is sent until you act: the Translate button, the translation card and the full-page status bar live in a closed Shadow DOM, so scripts on a web page cannot read selection translations, change these buttons, or press them for you. A click does not count if the button has only just appeared or the page has changed or moved its container. Full-page translations are inserted into the page itself, so the page can read those.
Once full-page translation has started, paragraphs that load later are sent too; after about 40,000 characters on one page, AI translation pauses and asks before continuing. Selection translation sends at most 5,000 characters at a time.
Once sent, the data is governed by the provider's own policies:
Note: under the Gemini API Additional Terms, content sent on the free tier may be used by Google to improve its products and may be reviewed by people. For sensitive content, use a paid plan or on-device translation.
5Permissions
storage: saves the settings and API keys described above.
contextMenus: adds “全頁翻譯” (Translate full page) to the right-click menu.
activeTab, scripting: when you choose full-page translation on a tab where the extension is not loaded yet (for example, a tab opened before installation), the translation code is added to that one page. This applies only to the tab you act on.
Site access (content script on all sites): shows the Translate button when you select text and translates the page when you ask. Page content is read only inside your browser and is sent nowhere unless you use Free AI or an AI model and trigger a translation.
The extension connects only to the API domains of the AI providers listed above, and to the developer's server when you use Free AI.
6Chrome Web Store User Data Policy
The use of user data by this extension complies with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements: data is used only to provide the translation you request; it is not sold; it is not transferred to third parties except to the AI provider you chose, at your request, or to Cloudflare Workers AI for translation when you use Free AI; it is not used for advertising, creditworthiness or any unrelated purpose; and the developer does not read or store it.
7Children's privacy
The extension is not directed to children under 13 and does not knowingly collect personal information from children.
8Changes to this policy
If the way data is handled changes, this page and the effective date above will be updated; significant changes will also be noted in the release notes on GitHub.
